How long does it take to become a Licensed Hairstylist in Ontario?
Thinking about becoming a hairstylist in Ontario? It’s an exciting and creative career path, but how long does it take to get licensed? Here's what you need to know about training, certification, and timelines under Ontario law.
The basics: Hairstylist is a compulsory trade in Ontario
In Ontario, hairstyling is a compulsory trade. This means you must hold a valid Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) or be registered as an apprentice under the Ontario College of Trades and Apprenticeship Act to legally work as a hairstylist.
Pathway to licensing: School
1. Hairstyling Program at a Private Career College
Most aspiring hairstylists start by enrolling in a Ministry-approved hairstyling program, like the one offered at Chellsey Institute.
● Duration: Typically around 1,500 hours (about 44 weeks).
● You’ll learn everything from cutting and coloring to health and safety standards.
● After graduating, you can register to take the licensing exam.
The final step: Certificate of qualification exam
No matter your path, you’ll need to pass the Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) exam to become fully licensed. This multiple-choice exam tests your knowledge of hairstyling theory, techniques, and health and safety practices.
Once you pass, you’re officially licensed to work anywhere in Ontario—and even across Canada.
