How to perfect the art of blowouts: tips & techniques
A flawless blowout is one of the most requested services in salons, and it’s a skill every stylist should master. Whether you're creating a sleek, shiny look or voluminous waves, knowing the right techniques and tools can make all the difference. Here’s how you can perfect the art of blowouts and deliver stunning results every time.
1. Start with clean, damp hair
For the best blowout, begin with freshly washed hair. Clean hair provides a better base for styling, allowing products to work more effectively. Gently towel-dry the hair to remove excess water before applying your styling products.
2. Use the right products
A great blowout starts with the right products. Consider a lightweight mousse or volumizing spray to add lift at the roots, and a smoothing serum or heat protectant to prevent frizz and protect the hair from damage. Apply evenly to damp hair, focusing on the roots and mid-lengths.
3. Section the hair
Sectioning is key to getting even results. Divide the hair into manageable parts, usually top, middle, and bottom. This makes the blowout process more organized and allows you to focus on one section at a time, ensuring no strands are left behind.
4. Choose the right tools
The right tools are essential for a professional blowout. A round brush is your best friend—choose a size based on the desired style. Larger brushes create volume, while smaller brushes give more control for sleek styles. A blow-dryer with a nozzle attachment helps direct airflow, reducing frizz and adding shine.
5. Master your technique
When blow-drying, work section by section. Start from the roots and move down to the ends, always following the brush with the dryer. Keep the dryer moving to prevent heat damage. For volume, lift the roots with the round brush and direct the airflow toward the roots before smoothing the length. For sleekness, pull the brush downward, following the natural flow of the hair.
6. Finish with a cool shot
Once each section is dry, use the cool shot button on your blow-dryer. This helps lock in the style, smooths the cuticle, and adds extra shine.
7. Add the final touches
Finish your blowout with a light hairspray or shine serum for a long-lasting, glossy finish. You can also add texture with a sea salt spray for beachy waves or use a curling iron for extra volume.
Perfecting the blowout is essential for every hairstylist. By mastering these tips and techniques, you’ll be able to give your clients the glossy, bouncy, and salon-perfect blowouts they’re always asking for!
